Explanation of services

The Naomi Berrie Diabetes Center helps patients integrate optimal diabetes management into their everyday lives by combining unprecedented, family-oriented patient care and education with world-renowned diabetes research programs.

The Center encourages all family members of the patient to participate in the education and treatment process. Family members as well as friends, classmates and teachers are encouraged to accompany patients to consultation visits.

The Center also offers group and individual educational programs for children, adults and families. Their unique children’s programs adds fun into diabetes education. Because people with diabetes may have to see multiple specialists, the center also provides on-site consultants and case managers to help coordinate all the diabetes care the patient receives.

The Center was designed to respect the dignity of people with diabetes and to acknowledge the fact that patients have active and productive lives. As a result, the center was built to include:

  • The BD Family Learning Center, which helps patients and families manage diabetes using an interactive education wall with a range of multimedia equipment including computers, videos, changing exhibits, and print materials.
  • A family-friendly waiting area stocked with toys, books, interactive games, art supplies, computers, telephones and VCRs.
  • A fully equipped pantry for snacks and cooking demonstrations.
Services include:
  • Diabetes Nurse Educators
  • Dieticians
  • Social Work and Family Counseling
  • Ophthalmology
  • Podiatry
  • Exercise Physiology
  • Clinical Trials Program (research opportunities)
  • Area’s largest insulin pump program
